Harkness Slide Presentations
I have been guided and inspired by Aida Conroy, a former Harkness mentor at Noble Academy in Chicago, Il. With her guidance, I work with teachers at our school work to scaffold Harkness instruction in steps:
Creating non-negotiables for each classroom to help establish an “urgency for learning;”
Working intentionally to create a classroom climate based on trust, mutual respect and collaboration;
Teaching the soft skills of civil discourse to students, and
Practicing these soft skills and collaborating in “Teamwork.”
Only when the students are proficient in the skills of Harkness in small groups do we invite them to “Come to the Harkness Table”.
The different slide shows linked here are examples of the presentations we use to share our Harkness experience with other schools, as well as other presentations used to train teachers in the implementation of Harkness.
